The Importance of Draping C-Arm Systems

In every sterile procedure, maintaining a protected environment is critical. Drapes create a dependable barrier between equipment and the sterile field—helping prevent contact-based contamination. Current sterile-technique guidance recommends covering sterile fields, or portions not in immediate use, with sterile drapes to reduce exposure risks.1

This is especially important when using mobile fluoroscopy systems (C-arms). These units move in and out of the sterile area throughout procedures, and their surfaces and cables can easily collect and transfer contaminants. Applying a drape between the table and the C-arm helps limit cross-contamination on the far side of the table, supporting a cleaner procedural environment.2

Research also shows that covering sterile instruments and supplies during pauses or high-traffic moments significantly reduces airborne bacterial contamination compared with leaving them exposed. Simply put, draping provides an added layer of protection when the field is most vulnerable.3

The importance of these precautions extends beyond protocol. In the U.S., surgical site infections (SSIs) remain a persistent concern—creating both clinical and financial strain. CDC data shows no national improvement in the 2023 SSI standardized infection ratio, with prior reports estimating around 110,800 inpatient SSIs each year. With some cases exceeding $30,000 in costs per infection, prevention remains one of the most effective ways to safeguard patients and control expenses.4

Keeping the C-Arm Truly “Outside” the Field

During complex IR cases, the C-arm moves in and out of position while the sterile field remains fixed. Using a split drape to connect the table to the image receiver creates a sealed bridge and has been shown to reduce far-side contamination; placing a sterile barrier between the C-arm and the table also reduces secondary contamination in lab testing—consistent with sterile-technique guidance to cover at-risk surfaces with sterile drapes.1
